The Focus RS looks amazing, but how does it stack up against its competitors? We compared the Ford Focus RS to the Subaru WRX STi and the Volkswagen Golf R, the older, more experienced brother of the Golf GTI.
We look at IIHS safety ratings, Engine specs, Horsepower, Torque, 0-60 times, Top Speed, Drive Train, MPG, and Price. Which is the best? Watch to find out!

There’s been a lot of talk about the new Focus RS, both good and bad. With that in mind, we wanted to see how it compares to the Golf R and WRX STi.
Stick around to see which is the ultimate compact performance car.

Now let’s get started with the IIHS safety tests.
The Focus RS received Good in all tests except the small overlap, which is notorious for being the hardest to pass. For that, it received the acceptable rating.
IIHS’s Top Safety Pick Plus award went to the Golf R for it’s good rating in all tests and front crash prevention features.
The STi also received the Top Safety Pick Plus award but received a slightly higher rating in crash prevention.
If you want an exciting car but also have to tote your kids around, any of these should be a solid safety pick.
Up next is our favorite, engine numbers!
Coming with a 2L Turbocharged Inline 4, the Golf R makes 292 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. Not bad, but the worst of these 3.
A 2.5L Turbocharged Flat 4 powers the STi which makes 305 hp and 290 lb-ft of torque. Again, good numbers, but still 50hp less than the RS.
On top is the Focus RS. It’s got the same 2.3L EcoBoost as the Mustang. Upgrades on the RS engine bring 350 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. Pretty good!
So how do those numbers translate to real world performance? Well, let’s take a look some 0-60s and top speeds.
The Golf R reaches 60 in 5.2 seconds with a top speed of 155.
The STi tops the Golf at 4.8 seconds for 0-60 and 159 for the top speed.
And again, at the top of the list is the RS with 0-60 times of 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 165.
All of these cars are AWD and have similar MPG, but with a performance car do you really care about how much you spend on gas?
I don’t. I just tear it up and fill it up and tear it up and fill it up and… buy new tires.
As far as pricing, they’re all in the mid 30’s, meaning if you can afford one, you can afford any of them.
But which is YOUR favorite? Let us know in our poll right here and then leave a comment down below.
Ours is definitely the Focus RS based on the numbers, but also because it’s got drift mode!
Let’s take a quick look at the infamous Ken Block and his use of drift mode.
*Drift noises*
*tire screech*
Ok, so we’ve gone over the numbers but honestly, if you want to know which you should get, you should go for a test drive! All three of these cars will probably scare the crap out of your passengers and make your kids happier than a trip to Disney World. So just go out and drive them.
