The new highway interchange design is coming to Florida and construction has already begun. The $74.5 million project is one-fifth complete and should be finished by August of 2017. This will become the largest Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) in the United States.
In case you are unfamiliar with a DDI, it diverts the traffic on the non-freeway road to the opposite side so that motorists are driving on the left side until being diverted back. This allows for better traffic flow by providing unimpeded left turns both to and from the ramps, and also keeps those cars from crossing paths with other traffic. A DDI also reduces the number of conflict points, locations where an accident is most likely to occur. Overall, a DDI is one of the latest and greatest innovations in traffic management.
Since its introduction to the U.S. in 2009, more than 60 DDIs have been built. Its cost effectiveness, efficiency, and proven safety benefits are what attracted the Florida DOT to the design. What do you think is the best solution to this kind of traffic issue?
