Troopers from Newark Station, Fatal Accident Unit, Crime Scene Investigations Unit, and Troop “D” CIO are investigating the crash that killed the driver of a tanker truck on the New Jersey Turnpike earlier today.

At 3:16 p.m., the victim was driving a tanker truck northbound in the center lane of the Turnpike in the area of milepost 109.5 in Kearny.

Based on the preliminary investigation, the driver encountered slowing traffic due to several mattresses and boxsprings in the roadway. The driver was unable to maintain directional control of the vehicle while attempting to avoid slowing traffic. As a result, the truck traveled across the right lane

The driver was entrapped in the vehicle and pronounced deceased at the scene. Currently, detectives are attempting to identify vehicle information, and the driver remains unidentifed pending a medical examination.

This remains and active investigation and there is no further information at this time.
