The newest Star Wars movie is going to be very important in regards to the future of the franchise. But that should be expected. Anytime a franchise moves from one director/creator to another (Christopher Nolan leaving The Dark Knight, for example), it’s going to be scary and inspire us to ask more than a few questions. Can the new vision live up to the old one? Will the script get too corny? Too many homages a la The Terminator franchise?
Fortunately, when it comes to JJ Abrams taking over for George Lucas, all of the early signs point to the franchise continuing on strong. Sure, they have decided to incorporate some old characters like Hans Solo and Princess Leia, but the trailers and the early publicity never treat them like props. Instead, they are showing the appropriate respect and seriousness for the characters. With those positive signs, it certainly looks like Star Wars: The Force Awakens is on its way to being a smash hit. Fingers crossed.
