Ever roll up to a stoplight looking to race? Sure, everybody has once or twice. Typically, on the line, there are a few cars you know not to screw with, and there are a couple of cars that you know will be cream puffs. A cream puff example??? A Toyota Camry.
Well, Toyota did their best to make us think twice about this notion when yesterday at SEMA they rolled out a Toyota Camry disguised dragster that can wallop out an extraordinary 850 horsepower.
Designed strictly to go in a straight line, this vehicle features a 5.7 -liter V8 engine, transmission, rear axle and electronics that were pulled from a Toyota Tundra pickup truck! Adding to the power, Toyota Racing Development donated a supercharger and a wet-nitrous-injection system, which helped boost it to that 850 horsepower figure.
“This is the most extreme build we’ve ever unveiled at SEMA,” said Toyota’s motorsports chief Steve Appelbaum in a statement. “The transformation from seemingly stock Camry to full-blown racecar just shocks the senses. Chuck Wade and the team at Motorsports Technical Center did a truly spectacular job executing the vision of this project.”
