The Back to the Future franchise is a staple of 80s pop culture. Hell, it’s a staple of ALL pop culture, and undoubtedly, Marty McFly is one of the coolest characters to ever come onto the screen.
One of the most memorable scenes in the entire franchise, of course, comes when Marty travels to the future and has to outrun Griff (the grandson of the almighty douche, Biff) on a futuristic hover board. Check it out…
People came out of the theatre thinking that the idea of a hover board seemed insane and completely attainable all at once. But…
WHEN THE HELL IS SOMETHING LIKE THIS THING COMING OUT???????
Well, fast forward 25 years, and we still haven’t gotten our hover board yet. BUT, we may be getting the next best thing.
Currently, UK entrepreneur Chris Malloy is leading a Kickstarter campaign in hopes of funding a hover bike. According to the campaign, “The Hoverbike is the result of years worth of R&D. We combined the simplicity of a motorbike and the freedom of a helicopter to create the world’s first flying motorcycle.”
But how does it work?
The campaign says, “When compared with a helicopter, the Hoverbike is cheaper, more rugged and easier to use – and represents a whole new way to fly. The Hoverbike flies like a quadcopter, and can be flown unmanned or manned, while being a safe – low level aerial workhorse with low on-going maintenance.”

This new manned Hoverbike may seem like it came out of nowhere, but it didn’t. For the past few years, Malloy and his team have been working diligently, perfecting a drone version (as seen in the video) of the bike that features all of the same dynamics.
As of right now, we are still a few months or maybe years until this bike is placed into mainstream production. Malloy says, “We are in the final construction stages of the latest manned prototype of Hoverbike, and in a few months we will start flight testing. After the successful completion of test flights we will build a final engineering prototype for submission to aviation certification authorities. “
Hey, but at least we know that the Marty McFly future is coming!!!
